The Bulletproof Rose List

For me, a Bulletproof Rose has to do more than look good in a photograph. It needs to be drought tolerant, disease resistant, relatively pest tolerant, and dependable in the heat and humidity of the Deep South. Most importantly, it needs to perform year after year.

These aren’t necessarily the newest roses on the market. Some are old favorites that have been proving themselves for generations. Others are newer varieties that have quickly earned a reputation for toughness. What they have in common is simple: they thrive on neglect.

And that matters.

Gardening in the Deep South isn’t the same as growing roses in a cool, dry climate. Our summers can be brutally hot. Humidity creates a perfect environment for fungal disease. Periods of drought can turn a beautiful garden into a stress test. Add insects, poor soil and the occasional stretch of weather that seems determined to kill everything in sight, and a rose has to be tough to make it here.

That’s why I’m compiling my list of Bulletproof Roses for the Deep South.

These are roses I have grown, observed and watched perform in Southern gardens. Roses that keep blooming when other plants are struggling. Roses that don’t require constant attention to look good. Roses that have demonstrated the kind of heat tolerance, drought tolerance and disease resistance that Southern gardeners need.

No rose is completely bulletproof. Give any plant enough heat, drought, disease pressure or neglect and eventually it will complain. But some roses complain a whole lot less than others.

And those are the roses I want in my garden.
